Harbor seals at danger in La Jolla, California

Casa Beach, also known as the Children's Pool, is a tiny beach in La Jolla, California that is famous for its colony of harbor seals that rest and give birth there. Unfortunately, there is a recent move to dredge the beach and make it into a “bathing pool” thereby leading to the habitat loss of harbor seals that live there. The approximately 200 strong harbor seal colony at this site is the only one of its kind in Southern California. This beach is a rookery where pups are born on the beach every year. If this dredging plan goes ahead we will no more see the seals on the beach.

The threats that these seals face are multi pronged. Local fishermen feel that the seals feeding on the fish affect their catch, and there are instances where these fishermen kill the seals. In addition to this, there are reports of hobby hunters who derive pleasure in killing or maiming the seals.

Finally we have some wealthy and influential local residents who do not like the seals being there for reasons such as the odor caused by the excretion, higher traffic because of the people coming to see the seals and they would like to have the luxury their own private sun bathe beach
without the crowds.

Uncertain times ahead:
Harbor seals resting at Casa Beach, La Jolla California.

I happened to speak with Marjanne Alam a member of a group called APRL(Animal Protection and Rescue League) who was doing a night‐watch to try prevent and document any harassment of these helpless creatures. In what she describes as a ‘scandalous’ turn of event, the concerned authorities have approved dredging of the beach immediately, not even waiting for the permits to be issued by the local governmental, military and environmental authorities.

A voice for the voiceless:
Marjanne explains the plight of seals.

Marjanne who works for the United Nations Environmental program says that there is a blatant disregard for the habitat of these creatures. She cites the example of how the kelp forests in the seas are under severe threat as a result of unchecked otter and sea urchin populations, which was in turn caused by the killing of sea lions.

Marjanne also narrated incidents to me, which describe pressure tactics and harassment by the civic authorities towards APRL volunteers, because the people who oppose the seals being at the cove are rich and influential. The most evident example of this is the fact that two lifeguards were placed under restraint order because of their involvement in harassment of ARPL volunteers.

The problem here is that despite of having a federal law that prohibits interfering with the habitat, the city of San Diego has favored the opening up of this tiny strip of sand beach to human use, whereby jeopardizing the home of these seals which are very shy in nature. This move apparently is in contradiction with the federal law.

Harbor seals must haul‐out (come out of the water onto dry land) each day in order to survive. Between 30% and 40% of their time is spent in this way. Harbor seals spend their entire lives along the same stretch of coastline. If the proposed drudging plan goes ahead we will see the habitat loss of these helpless animals, and in the near future we would also see how the eco‐system gets affected.

As a parting thought we need to understand that we need respect for the environment that we live in. The present day that we live in is not inherited by us, but our children lease it to us.

Your facts are so wrong, it's laughable.

"there is a recent move to dredge teh beach and make it into a 'bathing pool'"

http://www.sandiego.gov/citycouncil/cd1/neighborhoods/lajolla/cpoolhistory.shtml

The children's pool did not exist naturally. The break water was constructed and the land granted SPECIFICALLY for the purpose of creating a protected swimming beach for children.

"Local fishermen feel that the seals feeding on the fish affect their catch, and there are instances where these fishermen kill the seals."

As someone who actually fishes in the local waters you talk about (rather than blogging about them) I can tell you that these animals are NOT wild animals anymore than pigeons in a park are wild birds. They survive LARGELY based on the fisherman, who's fish and bait they steal. These seals will follow your boat around for miles trying to get free food from the end of your fishing line.

Noone that I know or have heard of has killed or injured any seals. There have been a few anecdotal incidents in southern california and those individuals have been prosecuted.

And, as someone who has BEEN to the children's pool, the harrassment that is taking place is at the hands of the so called seal protectors who themselves have often violated federal law in the name of protecting these seals and continually harass and intimidate those that disagree with them.

If you don't want the city to maintain the pool (via dredging) then I'd propose that the state take back the land it granted and destroy the breakwall and return the beach to it's natural state. See if your beloved seals stick around then.

It depends on your perspective.. I believe that every animal on this planet has the same right to live here as you and I do. If you feel humans as a species can survive alone, I've no comments on that 'coz your views reflect your shortsighted thoughts.

To the best of my knowledge seals were in the seas prior to any human started fishing.. so they "DON'T" need your bait to survive.

Finally doesn't San Diego have enough number of public beaches & swimming pools for children to play ? Why is there so much greediness on coveting this one small piece of land ?

The seals have a right yes, however they are becoming a pest and they sink, and poop all over the white sands of LJ shores, you every see what a seal bite looks like? Well, I have, these seals grow big testies, and will attack a human, would you like to see a small child mauled by one of these ocean cockroach's?
When a Mountain lion eats some ladies poodle, what happens? the loin is killed,, bottom line, these seals must be moved to another area...

Question. where were you born and where did you go to school? because if you are one of the many many transplants that are moving to San Diego to help shut down our fisheries and change our water front then sit down,,, I have heard enough of your spewing sewage.

M/V..

Yes Sire ! I get your view, we need potty trained seals, sharks without tooth and super intelligent whales that know the ship routes. It would also be helpful if we had grizzly bears those looked and behaved like those teddies the kids carried around.. I also would recommend relocating the polar bears to the Sahara desert... Answer to your question.. none of your business.

To anonymous..
The very fact that you reply as "anonymous" kinda reflects the fact that you know, somewhere deep down, what a big jackass you are, and how blinded and limited your views are towards the world.

If someone invades/encroaches into your property, according to you, you will just let them be. According to you, it really doesnt matter if they screw up your already screwed up place. You some how would believe its their birth right to move in and mow you over, dirty your place, get their family and friends over, eat from your kitchen and mess up your "den".

Now, unless you agree to the above statements, go back to your previous post and think about the nonsense tat you just crapped out. "Try" to be a little more broad minded and realise that YOU also have some responsibility towards the fellow inhabitants of the planet.

Funny,

This whole situation recently entered my realm of consciousness - sure I had heard of the bickering - but life and it's distractions resulted in me being more or less neutral.

For the record - I consider myself pro environment and animal rights.

I surf often and occasionally skin dive for lobster. I am not (nor have I ever been) a SCUBA diver, and I have never shot a fish with a spear gun, I (like us all) have fished with a fishing pole .

Tonight - I was verbally harassed and told by the very subject who is the centerpiece of this thread (Ms Marjane whomever - who was quick to state that the "work" she was doing was some way for, in conjunction with, or condoned by the United Nations - which I believe she states as her employer or basis for her "credentials") that - and bear with me because my paraphrasing is just that as I was surprised by the level of volume?, intensity?, confrontation?,conviction?, lunacy? (I'm not sure of the correct adjective but let's say her tone was INTENSE) ..that .. and I quote:

"We're winning!" -

who is we and are you fighting me? -

I'm pretty sure she was referring to her wanting the Children's Pool to be a place where the seals are protected from human interaction

and

GET THIS - THIS IS THE KICKER - AND DON'T BE AFRAID TO COMPARE HER NEXT WORDS WITH THE BLOG POST ABOVE THAT WE'RE ALL COMMENTING ON -

"I'm one of those rich La Jollans so if you" - I'm sure she thought I was part of some group that wanted the Children's Pool to remain open to the public and children (which BTW - I am sure getting close to becoming a member of one based on my recent observations)...."want to fight ME" yep - she sid ""ME""...."you better get back to work." From the tone I presume she meant that because I was a common schmuck and she was - in her own words "rich" - I couldn't afford a legal battle with her.

So I know personal bickering should not be a focal point of this whole debate -I just thought it'd be interesting to point out the complete hypocrisy of this "lady"'s own words as presented in the blog article upon which we are commenting.

Admittedly, I am intimidated by the groups "keeping watch" of the seals (complete with shouting into bullhorns and what not) - so I'll probably back down - but I am just having a hard time rationalizing the whole argument of preserving nature and a not-at-all endargered - albeit nice enough and cute - seal population in a man made environment -

??

Am I the only one who sees the complete contradiction here?

my next email is to the UN - perhaps I'm wrong - perhaps they are backing the dedication of a man made beach to a local seal population

the good news is that a fair bit of our local politicians are both environmentally conscience and pro public beach access

thanks for your blog

:)

OH yeh - as stated by one of the other people who posted a reply - pro or con in terms of public access to the waters off of the Children's Pool - the idea of someone intentionally hurting or attacking a seal is as ludicrous as it is repulsive - and yet make no mistake - as I have observed during a life around the sea - in some area the seals are as domesticated as park animals (see the pigeon analogy herein) - if you don't believe me - go the the Pt. Loma or Mission Bay Bait barges -or as some others may argue - the Children's Pool

WHatever the outcome of this argument - I hope this is settled quick as nobody benefits form all this shouting and fighting
